Reef Carbon

Activated carbon is without a doubt one of the most used methods of chemical filtration in our hobby, mainly because it is a very cost-effective way to remove organic waste, toxins, phenols, odour, heavy metals, chlorine and chloramine.

Reef Carbon small mesh/grain size makes it at least 30% more efficient than higher grain/mesh size competitors! 

Reef Carbon is, likely the best available choice in the UK due to the high quality and efficient specification. It is manufactured from specifically selected grades of coconut shell by a steam activation process. It is manufactured under stringent controlled conditions to produce a porous absorbent with a highly developed surface area, resulting in a high purity and efficiency absorbent.  

This makes Reef Carbon the perfect choice for both saltwater and fresh aquarium when it comes to the export of unwanted elements, contaminants and the yellow organic tint that often gives an undesired look to our aquariums.

Reef Carbon hardness is amongst the highest available ensuring that carbon dust or particles don’t freely travel to the aquarium.

Its surface area is also one of the highest available meaning that has great contact surface to maximise exposure to the unwanted elements, the number of pores and their size is very high, ensuring that Reef Carbon is extremely efficient in removing and retaining pollutants.

With extremely low phosphate leaching and with only 0.5 - 1% of ash content Reef Carbon doesn’t contribute to the pollution in your aquarium.


The Iodine number is amongst the highest available making it one of the most efficient activated carbons in terms of adsorption capacity of small molecules. It is recommended that for aquarium use the Iodine number should be at least 850 mg/g, Reef Carbon is 1050 mg/g.

Our activated carbon undergoes strict BS EN ISO quality and environmental certifications, which ensure the activated carbon we provide you is of the highest quality and doesn’t have any undesired contaminants like metals and magnetic particles.

How to use:

We recommend rinsing the carbon with water to remove any fine dust and trapped air.

In normal conditions use 50g per 200l of water and place the carbon in a reactor with 900-1500 lph of flow without allowing it to tumble.

An increased volume can be used for medication or pollutant removal, in these cases double the volume can be used.

Reef Carbon can also be used passively in a filter bag.

Replace the carbon every 1-2 months as it becomes depleted.
